18th Century French Louis XIV 'Pillars of Hercules' Fireback / Backsplash
About the Item
Early 18th century French Louis XIV with a multitude of symbols. There are the pillars of Hercules. The pillar refers to the club of Hercules, his favorite weapon. It symbolizes power and the unknown. The pillars are topped with angels. The monogram IHS stands either for Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jezus the Savior of Humanity) or for In Hoc Signo (In this sign will you win). Furthermore the name of the first proprietor of the fireback is cast in the fireback, as well as the date of production 1724.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black. The fireback is in a good condition and has no cracks.
