Art Deco Fireplace Tools by Birmingham Guild of Handicrafts

About the Item

Mid-1920s cast aluminum fireplace tool caddy and tools in the form of an octagonal medallion above a flat column and moulded base; beaten onto the face of the medallion is a stylized kneeling goddess holding an overflowing cornucopia and a sheaf of wheat. Original fire irons with cylindric aluminum handle hang from hooks on the verso: shovel, poker and clawed tongs. A plate reads: Bham Guild Ltd. Birmingham per design Made in England. From the estate of Corey Warn and Mark Feldman of Antiquers III, Brookline, MA. The Birmingham Guild of Handicraft was an Arts and Crafts organization established in 1890. It was founded by Arthur Stansfield Dixon, who was friends with William Morris and Charles Robert Ashby. By 1895 the Guild had formed its own independent workshop and became a limited company. The Guild’s motto was ‘By Hammer and Hand’, and it produced high quality, handmade pieces of metal ware and furniture, and also pressed fine illustrated books and a periodical called The Quest, to which Morris contributed. Edgar Brandt designed elaborate decorative metalwork elevators for Selfridge's Department Store produced by the guild in 1928. During World War II they produced aeroplane parts for the De Havilland factory in Hatfield. The Guild struggled financially with several mergers, but was active until the 1950s. It was closely associated with Birmingham School of Art, with many of the designers and craftspeople who worked for the company having either trained or taught at the School. Designers associated with the Guild included Albert Edward Jones, George T. Tarling, Claude Napier Clavering, Charles Llewellyn Roberts and Thomas Birkett.
