16th Century Italian Renaissance Fireplace Mantel Piece - Antique Surround
About the Item
An Italian surround or formal fireplace mantel from an antique villa near Verona. The flanking superbly carved wooden Ionic columns have been finished with a Venetian marble paint. The entire interior gilded dentil frame is set onto a double frame. This was faux finished in a green Venetian marble patina. The front of the surround has finely carved scrolling leaves on a green background. A light wood which was used during the Renaissance period for fine carving, original condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1580, Italy.
