19th Century Louis XV Style Soft Rouge Marble Fireplace Surround
About the Item
19th century Louis XV style beautiful fireplace sculpted in a soft colored Rouge Royal marble. The finely carved shelf rests on a serpentine front, with a rocaille shell framed by flowers. The jambs are hand-carved in the form of curved and tapered pilasters with cartouche echoed on the end blocks. In excellent condition. This bright red marble is characterized by the presence of white calcite flames. It was widely used in furniture, decoration and fireplaces, especially during the construction of castles like Versailles, Louveciennes, the Louvre and Palais Royal. This powerful marble is also called "Red Louis XIV” since the Sun-king liked this marble.
