Early Victorian Radford Black Fireplace

About the Item

An early Victorian Radford Black fireplace, the plain shelf and panelled frieze supported by jambs with unusual double corbels, on block feet. After some investigation it was discovered that the material used for this fireplace is a seldom seen British limestone from the Radford/Pomphlett quarry near Plymouth. As typical with a number of other limestones from the area it takes a particularly good polish, giving the appearance of a marble.
