Giovan Battista Mitri Sculptural Chimney In Majolica, 1960s

About the Item

Giovan Battista Mitri sculptural chimney, majolica, Italy, 1960s. This handmade majolica chimney is a unique piece from the artist’s collection. Originally made in the early 1960s for the main room of Palazzo Bollani in Venice, this piece was conceived to be used as a real chimney and decorative installation. The great central hole and the iron base instead remind of the fireplace of Venetian glass furnaces. The artist committed to bestiaries inspired by archaic suggestions and cubistic compositions since the 1940s. Mitri’s style is explicit in this piece: a bunch of ancestral stylized figures such as horses, man, and other beasts in hunting scenes and rural life engraved in the majolica, a clear reminder of cave painting. Born in San Vito al Tagliamento (PN) and apprentice of Arturo Martini, Giovanni Battista Mitri (1915-2000), called Giobatta, turned into a potter master in his Venetian furnace and teacher at the State Institute of Art in Venice.   Our atelier carefully restored this chimeney. Slight signs of use and time.

Charles Dudouyt easy chairs, straw and wood, France, 1940s, set of four. Recalling the turned chair model, Charles Dudouyt created these carved chairs as 'fireside' chairs, hence the low seats. Using playful geometries and construction, he crafted the wooden structure in Art Deco forms. The seats' original straw is preserved and creates a charming contrast with the dark wooden structure. The legs are joined by crosspieces, enhancing the squared shape of the design. Dudouyt enriched the typical French straw chair...
