Reclaimed Victorian arched cast iron fireplace insert
About the Item
A good sized reclaimed Victorian arched cast iron fireplace insert. Circa 1860.
The insert has the lesser seen solid clay base for the grate. This style of grate was advertised as a ''slow combustion grate'' and boasted saving 30-40% in fuel over other grates! This is due to the solid base to the fire. The coal or logs sit on a solid clay base rather than a pierced cast iron base, so less oxygen feed the fire and the combustion of the fuel is slowed whilst still producing good heat.
Finished in heat resisting black paint.
