Sir Edwin Lutyens Chimneypiece from Papillon Hall, England

About the Item

A rare opportunity to own a piece of furniture designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. This large chimneypiece was designed by Lutyens for Papillon Hall, England in 1903. It is made of hand carved mahogany with a beautiful patina. There is a deep mantel (fireplace) shelf above the fire surround and a servants bell to the right. The house was demolished in 1951 and this chimneypiece has been privately owned in Scotland ever since, after being rescued from the billiard room, for which it was made. The 17th century Papillon Hall was remodelled by Lutyens in 1903 along the lines of Chesters, a house Lutyens admired. Papillon had three principle wings, the salon, the dining room and the billiard room. As items like these would be prohibited from being removed today, this is a very rare example of a large scale work of furnitureby Lutyens becoming available for sale. Attached is Lutyens plan for the house, with the ‘Own’ Room, being in fact the Billiard Room. Country Life have kindly let use images from their archive of the house before it was demolished. There is a rouge marble bolection associated with it, which can be fitted optionally. Further measurements: mantel (fireplace) piece: 171 cm wide x 23 cm deep. fire opening: 148 cm wide x 108cm high. bolection (If used): 110 cm wide x 104 cm high inside.
