Antique French Cast Iron Fountain Facade, Circa 1890

Dating to circa 1900, this French dolphin fountain consists of two pieces of cast iron that have developed a wonderful oxidized and verdigris patina. The vertical dolphin has a rising tail that intertwines around a bouquet of typha (commonly referred to as cattail or bulrush). Designed to be affixed to a wall, the downward-facing dolphin has an open mouth, allowing water to fill the scalloped shell basin below. The basin has a height of five and a quarter inches, with an existing drainage hole. Both items are highly detailed, from scales of the dolphin to the striations of the shell. A stylized depiction of the first appearance of the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, this fountain façade was hand-carved in limestone in Paris. Although there are several theories about the creation of Aphrodite, one of the most common legends is that she mysteriously arose from the Mediterranean Sea, either near Cyprus or the Greek Island of Kythira. Carved in mid-relief, the face of Aphrodite can be seen encircled by various seashells as if she were emerging from the water. Above her head is another large shell, flanked by a pair of volutes that comprise the double-arched top of the stone. Aphrodite’s mouth has been carved agape, with an opening of ¾ of an inch, allowing the façade to be paired with a basin for a cascading water fountain...

Made from tin-glazed pottery, known as faience, this antique French interior wall fountain is from circa 1880. All three sections that comprise the fountain have been hand painted in cobalt blue and white, reminiscent of Delftware that was popular in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
