Carriage. “N. Larsen s Vognfabrik” (N. Larsen Factory), Denmark, 20th century.

About the Item

Open carriage with four wheels with springs of crossbow that has a high davit (this one surrounded a “box” with balusters that allows to take several sitting people). This type of animal-drawn vehicles was usually used in the fields, although nowadays it is more frequent to see them in fairs and important events. It has upholstered surfaces, lanterns on the sides, decorations on the wood, etc. A metal plate refers to the place of manufacture of the vehicle. The Carriage Factory N. Larsen of Copenhagen has been, above all, known for dealing with the first diesel engine of Burmeister & Wain at the initiative of Rudolf Diesel, having it ready for testing in 1904. N. Larsen was a carpenter and car manufacturer who started his business in 1856; at the end of the 19th century they were mainly known for building some cars for the royal family, for the manufacture of “omnibus” (Frederiksberg Sporvejs and Copenhagen Omnibuscompagny) and wagons for the electric trams of Frederiksberg Sporvejs-og Elektricitets Aktieselskab, starting with the manufacture of automobiles a bit later. Carriages made in this factory are preserved in several private collections (mostly danish) and institutions such as the Malmö Museers (landeau of the early 20th century), the Sporvejsmuseet, etc. Also, and comparing with old catalogs of carriages, it is possible to find similarities with the type known in French as "char-à-banc", also usual in Denmark. · Size: 234x156x173 cms.
