An important and early stone pagoda "stupa" from an old Japanese garden, only one
Japan, a fine and amazing surviving pagoda stupa sculpted in three pieces in a convenient portable size from a gray-brown sedimentary stone. This one dates to the 17th- 18th century. It takes its name from Hokyo Darani Sutra, which were placed inside Heian Period 8th century stupas

Measuring: 24 inches high and 10 inches wide, this uniquely Japanese stupa form also known as a "hokyointo" takes its name from the Hokyo Darani sutra, copies of which were placed inside Heian Period 8th century stupas in this style made from wood or bronze. From 12th century on during the Kamakura Period (13th century), hokyo sculpted from stone began to be used as commemorative markers particularly of important personages.
This is a very fine example from an old Nagoya garden.

This tiered tower composition became popular all over Asia and its architectural form differed from region to region. In China, its origins date to Buddhist missionaries who traveled the Silk Road. Early examples were built in temples but by the 13th century they were found outside the temple complex. Oldest examples had simple round or square bases and then later octagonal or more stylistic forms like the “censer” type of base on this pagoda. The 18 Arhats (lohans) portray Buddha’s messengers and each Lohan cylindrical tier is unique.
