Pair of Exceptional Carrara White Marble Vases Grand Tour
About the Item
Exceptional pair of vases in the shape of a cantharus.
From a foot with overlapping moldings like strips, woven ribbons and acanthus leaves, a smooth stem rises, tapering towards the top, with a crown knot of laurel leaves tied by ribbons. It has the saucer decorated with pods and the body decorated with a continuous bas-relief. The owl's beak hem is decorated with ovals and arrows; the double handles are connected to it by a collar, the ends of which, wrapped in spirals of decreasing size, rest on the upper part of the rim.
Remarkable for its large size, for the classic beauty of its shape, for the intense purity of its white Carrara marble, and also by the very high quality of its décor, a basrelief on the Dionysian putto theme. The model, of which it is the copy made in the 18th century by Massimiliano Laboureur and Lorenzo Cardelli between 1783 and 1785, on the occasion of the renovation of the villa promoted by Marcantonio Borghese.
Timeless decoration for you interior or garden.

- Pair of Grand Tour Greek Bronze Vases on Marble BasesLocated in London, GBA decorative pair of Grand Tour bronze-patinated urns of ancient Greek 'volute krater' form, Italy, 19th century. Why we like them We love the decorative look of these urns, evoking the Grand Tour travels of the 19th century. Perfect for lamp conversion. Design This shape was introduced in the late 6th century B.C. and was favoured by significant artists who worked in terracotta and in bronze. The earliest example in bronze belongs to the late 5th century B.C. and was found in a tomb in Agrigento. A characteristic of volute-krater handles is the fine articulation of the volute itself and of the lower terminals where they rested on the shoulder of the vase. Here, as in most metal examples, they assume the form of swans' heads. A pair of handles of this design is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Chiurazzi, De Angelis and Sommer where the main Neapolitan foundries that catered for the needs and tastes of the grand-tourists throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. They produced a wide range of fine quality objects, often using the museum casts...Category
