Pair of Limestone Greek Style Ionic Column Pedestals

About the Item

A spectacular pair of English Greek style Portland limestone ionic column pedestals dating to circa 1800. Suitable for use as display plinths or simply architectural features, these 220-year-old late Georgian stone columns are evocative of the great architecture found in Rome and Greece during the height of the neoclassical era. With their generous scrolls and central anthemion embellishment, they are reminiscent of the great ionic Erechtheum (also Erechtheion) capitals that once stood in the ancient Greek temple of the same name in Athens. Each antique column is a half round, classically carved with fluting to create a matching pair. Both pedestals have a cream stone colour typical of the Portland variety, with grey-brown weathering in places that only adds to their unique beauty. Suitable for use indoors and out, they could be used together as interior plinths to display a pair of busts, statues, vases or similar, or placed outside in a garden as a neoclassical feature. We are also selling other sets of limestone column pedestals in a similar style. Additional Dimensions Dimensions stated are for each. Weight stated is for both.
