English Compton Pottery Large Celtic Style Terracotta Planter

About the Item

An English Compton Pottery Celtic style terracotta pot or planter dating from the early 20th century. With its spectacular red colour and Art Nouveau style detailing, this terracotta pot is typical of Compton Pottery, particularly Celtic style pots influenced by designer, Archibald Knox (1864-1933). It is unstamped with a potter’s mark to the inside. If looking for a pair, we are also selling a slightly smaller Compton pot in a similar design - please enquire for more details. Founded in 1904, the Compton Potter’s Arts Guild was established by Mary Seton Watts (1849-1938). The pottery produced a wide range of ceramics, jewellery and gardenware in the early 20th century but were best known for their distinctive pots. These were made from locally sourced red terracotta and laid out for sale outside the factory as well as other outlets including the legendary Liberty of London. Here, Mary was named as designer, working alongside other talented artisans such as Archibald Knox. Following Mary’s death in 1938, Compton Pottery continued production for a number of years before closing in 1956.

  • Archibald Knox' Liberty Celtic ‘Beowulf’ Planter
By James Carter, Liberty & Co., Archibald Knox
    Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An early 20th century Arts and Crafts style Celtic planter or jardiniere and pedestal in terracotta after a design for Liberty’s London (stamped) by celebrated designer Archibald Knox. Titled ‘Beowulf’, this large Celtic plant pot designed by Knox was manufactured for Liberty’s by J. Carter and Co, as is stamped on the socle. Carters made stone garden ware and terracotta for Liberty between 1900 and 1910. Often unstamped, Celtic style planters like these are often mistakenly attributed to the Compton Pottery. However, we can be certain that this one was made for the luxury department store in London due to the ‘Liberty & Co’ stamp on the inside. Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was a pioneer of modern 20th century design. He was Liberty’s primary designer at the height of their success during the early 20thcentury, his balance of Arts and Crafts, Modernism, Celtic Revival...
