Large Roman Marble Neoclassical Cistern or Planter from Carcassonne Castle

About the Item

Large Carved Roman Marble Cistern from Carcassonne Castle in Marblehead, MA. Carved Classical Scene of Sea Centaurs, Hippocamps and Water Gods and Goddesses. An open mouthed dolphin once allowed water to escape from one side. Carcassonne Castle is a 23 room Stone Castle built in 1935 during the Great Depression for the daughter of Lydia Pinkham, the woman's health entrepreneur. The cost at the time was $ 500,000 and the owners received a commendation from President Roosevelt for putting so many unemployed craftsmen to work. Stone and objects were brought in from all over Europe. This cistern was one of them. Purchased by Lydia Pinkham Gove from Italy as "A 17th Century Carved Marble" though we believe it may be 19th Century. We acquired this (with help) directly from Lydia Pinkham's Great Grand Children. Dimensions: Cistern itself: 40" wide 28" deep 16" high Add 16" in height when cistern is on top of the lion supports
