19th Century German Carved Polychrome Carousel Horse by P. Schneider

About the Item

A rare antique, circa 1890s, German hand carved and painted wood carousel horse carnival fair ride by Peter Schneider (famous for making the first double decker carousel in 1898). Exquisitely hand-crafted by Philip Schneider in Frankfurt, Germany, in the late 19th century. Built at the height of the golden age of the carousel amusement ride, this exceptionally executed prancer standing style carousel horse. Intricately detailed, polychrome decorated, professionally restored and repainted in the past, mounted on a later cast iron base display stand. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: Carowinds Theme Park, Charlotte, North Carolina; Property from an important Private Collection. In 1972, the carousel was bought and installed at Carowinds Theme Park, North Carolina, United States, were it operated until 1974. Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas. 2022 Fine & Decorative Arts Showcase Auction catalog #13191 Dimensions: (approx) 60" Tall, 56" Wide, 16" Deep Condition Report: A superb museum quality example, in overall great condition, with beautifully aged patina, minor surface wear and typical paint losses as expected with age and use. Real horse hair tail is fraying and in poor shape. The life-size folk art sculpture presents splendidly, it has been professionally repainted and restored in the past.
