About the Item

Beautiful representation in white marble of the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto Abduction of Proserpina The subject is linked to the theme of the cycle of the seasons and is taken from a specific passage in Ovid's Metamorphoses: "when in a flash Pluto saw it, fell in love with it and kidnapped it". The young and beautiful Proserpina, daughter of Jupiter and Ceres (goddess of fertility and harvest), was noticed by Pluto, the terrible King of the Underworld, who, having fallen in love with her, kidnapped her while collecting flowers at the Pergusa lake near Enna. To better understand the subject, we must re-read Ovid's Metamorphoses, where the moment in which the god of the underworld attacks Ceres' daughter, who is intent on picking flowers in a grove near a lake, is described. The goddess "was having fun picking violets and white lilies, filling the baskets and the garment with childish zeal, competing with her companions to those who most caught them, when in a flash Pluto saw her, fell in love with her and kidnapped her: so passionate was that passion. Terrified, the goddess invoked her mother and companions with a sorrowful voice, but more her mother; and since he had torn the lower edge of the robe, it loosened and the flowers gathered fell to the ground: so much was the whiteness of that young woman, that in her virgin heart the loss of flowers also caused her pain " Ceres, due to the pain, left the fields, causing a very serious famine. Jupiter, therefore, intervened by finding an agreement between Pluto and Ceres also thanks to the mediation of Mercury: Proserpina would have spent six months with her mother favoring the abundance of the crops while, for the remaining months of the year, the winter ones, she would have remained with Pluto Hades. The name Proserpina derives from Poserpere which symbolizes the "slipping out" of the seed from the earth
