French Reconstituted Stone Statue of the Greek God Pan, from Vincennes C. 1950s
About the Item
Cast in reconstituted stone, circa the 1950s, this statue of the Greek god, Pan, rests on top of an Ionic order capital, standing over six feet tall. Discovered at a chateau in Vicennes, France, less than five miles east of Paris, the statue was part of an outdoor installation, as indicated by the buildup of moss and lichen. The stone was cast with a gray hue, but has developed a speckled patina of white, brown, and ochre.
Considered a half body sculpture (as opposed to a bust), Pan is depicted with arms, holding an eponymous pan flute beneath his extended goatee. His lips are pursed, as if caught in the midst of playing a melody. Pan wears a crown comprised of grape clusters behind his scrolled horns. Beneath his torso is a circular base with several layers of molding and a center protuberance that sits on top of the Ionic style volutes. A small egg and dart molding graces the area between the scrolled heads above a smooth cylindrical column. The column terminates in a molded circular foot on top of a four inch thick square plinth. Our French reconstituted stone statue of Pan can be displayed either inside or outdoors.
