Italian Pair of Marble Lions, after Antonio Canova

About

A fine pair of antique Italian carved marble recumbent lions. The originals, famous guardians of the tomb of Pope Clement XIII, were sculpted by Canova. They were much copied in various sizes from bookends to lifesize and often were bought by English Gentlemen on the Grand Tour. We bought these because they are beautifully carved, of imposing size and original weathered patina. They stood originally in the grounds of Bois de la Roche, a mansion near Montreal. The surrounding grounds were laid out by Frederick Olmstead famous for Central Park. These lions flanked the front door, one asleep, the other for ever vigilant.
