John Cheere Lead Garden Figure
About the Item
Wonderful English 18th century lead garden figure.
This statue depicts a jovial musician with his instrument. Resting on a shaped pedestal base.
This charming figure comes from the workshop of John Cheere, which was established at Hyde Park Corner in 1738.
As the fashion for French-style gardens swept through Europe in the 18th Century, the likes of Cheere seized the initiative to create statuary in lead - which was easier and more cost-effective to produce than marble, and more suitable for the English climate.
The use of lead for garden ornament spread widely as its qualities became apparent.
This figure is beautifully patinated. He will have a brilliant presence in any garden or parkland.
