Measures : Height 157 cm, width 57 cm, depth 50 cm. Artemis is, in ancient Greek religion, the goddess of wilderness, hunting and childbirth. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was equated with the goddess Diana in Roman mythology. Artemis is most often depicted in ancient Greek art as a beautiful and young huntress with a quiver and a bow or, alternatively, a spear. She is often accompanied by a deer or a hunting dog, and sometimes she wears a feline skin. Symbolism is a European artistic movement, which developed in the 1870s and reached its peak in the 1890s. It first appears in poetry before gaining in painting, music and theater. The term symbolism comes from the Greek and means "to tie together" to suggest cross references and oaks of meaning between apparently very distant images. Seeking to explore hidden universes, these artists developed an aesthetic as far removed from visual sensibility as from academic or scientific approach.The Symbolists willingly explore the world of medieval legends (Fantin-Latour, Burne-Jones), of dreams (DG Rossetti, Fernand Khnopff) of hallucination (Moreau, Klimt) or on the contrary a nostalgic Antiquity (Puvis de Chavannes). We are dealing here with a symbolist interpretation of the ancient statue of Artemis. Here she appears androgynous and nostalgic in her expression. No doubt the artist's desire to pay homage to Antiquity and its creations, which was the case for many artists in the Symbolist movement.
