Large Victorian 19th Century Stained Glass Window

About the Item

An antique Victorian late 19th century stained glass window, originally from a church in northern England. Three hand painted detailed flowers, thought to be Tudor Rose, sit at the heart of this piece. It incorporates both ecclesiastical and medieval style, accompanied by its vibrant colours of red, blue, green and yellow. This Victorian style window would make a stunning feature in a renovated traditional home looking to keep elements of history, or for a sympathetically decorated converted chapel or ecclesiastical building. How is stained glass made? The process of making stained glass begins with creating a drawing of the design, first in a smaller version and then a full-sized one known as a cartoon. The next step is cutting solid pieces of coloured glass, before decorating textured glass with enamel paints and using lead or copper frames to hold the glass together. This traditional method was first recorded in the late 11th century. Additional information The overall dimensions are the size of the glass, not including the frame.

A large antique late 19th century Ecclesiastical style stained glass window signed by Ward & Hughes, London, 1890. This window is of excellent artistry, with each tiny detail hand painted by a late 19th century artist. The stained glass depicts a religious scene, thought to be Joseph being visited by one of the Lord’s angels in a dream. The angel told Joseph to not be afraid and take Mary home as his wife, because what was conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit. The angel said they will call their son Jesus because he was to save his people from their sins. A piece of art showcasing such religious meaning, only deserves to be pride of place inside a home or property - perhaps even a new addition to a church or chapel. Ward & Hughes, London Ward & Hughes, based in Frith St, Soho, London, proved to be one of the most successful stained glass studios of its time, known for its distinctive style. It was initially a partnership between Thomas Ward and James Henry Nixon...
