'Tree of Life' Picture Window Attributed to John S. Bradstreet

About

A new piece of Bradstreet history could be told with this set of double-hung windows with Tree of Life stained glass motif. John Scott Bradstreet was a predominant craftsman in Minneapolis during the turn-of-the-century. Working out of the Minneapolis Crafthouse, he was an influential “taste-maker” in his pursuit of more avant-garde ideas. On multiple occasions, Bradstreet visited Japan, which influenced his designs and led to the development of his unique style of woodworking. His interiors have been preserved in Minneapolis homes and up until now, his Scope of work was believed to be limited primarily to the Midwest region of the U.S. Here is where the story gets interesting: This set of windows was one of several found at the Frank G. Jones Residence in Memphis, Tennessee. In glass, leadwork, design and primarily in the motif, this window bears a striking resemblance to the 'Tree of Life' landing window from the William Kenyon Home in Minneapolis. How would a window like this end up in Memphis, one might ask? Frank Jones, otherwise known as 'Streetcar Jones' was the vice president of the Memphis Street Railway Co., followed the race horse circuit, and entertained nationally prominent people in his home. Originally from Iowa, Jones and his wife often travelled to the Midwest to attend The National Street Convention where most likely their paths crossed with the prominent folks of the MInneapolis area who had already discovered the magnificent work of Bradstreet. The 1899 Street Railway Journal places Jones and his wife at the Tattersall dinner with the Lowrys, the Merrits and the Calderwoods, known patrons of Bradstreet. With the growing popularity of Japonisme in America, one would guess that the Joneses also hired Bradstreet to bring his exotic flair to Memphis.   This listing is for both top and bottom windows. Measurements - top: 46" tall x 56 1/2" wide bottom: 48" tall x 56 1/2" wide
