Chinese Measure Basket, circa 1800
About the Item
Basket making is an ancient and humble craft, but in the hands of a skilled weaver a simple willow basket can become a truly beautiful work of art. This basket was made in China long ago, and the artisan’s mastery is evident, having been passed down from generation to generation. The strong, flexible willow strips are skillfully intertwined into a delicate pattern throughout the basket. Shaped with a tapered form, the body of the basket is artfully secured to a tight rattan coil at the rim. The basket has worn with time, but remains in remarkable condition as a testament to its craftsmanship.
