Barovier and Toso 20th Century Italian Wedding Cup in Cobalt Blue Glass Painted

About the Item

A Barovier and Toso design from Murano Italy. An Italian wedding cup dating to the mid 20th century created in cobalt blue glass with hand painted and gilt decoration. The bell shaped top is painted and decorated with Renaissance inspired painted portrait busts in medallion form of a courting couple in two separate medallions, in between the scenes of a procession of courtiers on horse back and maidens bathing in the fountain of love and youth, on trumpet shaped foot with swirled gilding. This design is based on the original wedding cup which was made in Murano by the glass-making family of Barovier. It was manufactured circa 1470-80, and enameled by Angelo Barovier. The original is on display at the Murano glass museum. A bit about the Barovier and Toso firm from the Veranda website, "Few brands that are still in existence today can date themselves back before the Italian Renaissance, but Murano, Italy-based lighting company, Barovier&Toso, is one such brand. Founded in 1295 by the Barovier family, the company leaves a legacy as storied and prestigious as its 700-year-history. The original company, as founded by the Baroviers, cemented itself in the early 15th century when the Italian Renaissance was in full-swing. Angelo Barovier, known as "The Elder," was a true Renaissance man and channeled his passion for art and science into revolutionary—and beautiful—new glassmaking techniques. One of his crowning achievements was the development of cristallino, or clear, glass, which was such a pure and transparent glass that the he was granted an exclusive patent by the Republic of Venice. His fame in the glass industry was akin to Michelangelo's or Leonardo Da Vinci's in the realms of sculpture and painting." The article continues and also illustrates another version of this Italian wedding cup.
