Ceramic Lusterware Bowl with Metallic Glaze by Beatrice Wood

About the Item

A large ceramic lusterware bowl by American artist and studio potter Beatrice Wood (1893-1998). The piece, circa 1980s, is of an upright deep form typical of a rice bowl, supported by a small foot ring. The surface was applied with brilliant metallic multi-color glazes in splashes and streaks, forming a cross pattern in the inner well that spills out to the exterior/ The visual effect the piece achieves evokes the mesmerizing op art, which might be in the artist's mind during the creating process. Signed on the bottom "Beato" in black mark. Beatrice Wood was a multi-disciplinary artist and author. In her long life and career, she was known as Mama of Dada, an avant-garde artist, a potter, an author, and an inspiration. Her long career with pottery is distinguished by a signature style of in-glaze luster that draws the metallic salts to the surface of the glaze by starving the kiln of oxygen.
