F. Barbedienne, 19th Century French Gilt Bronze and Cloisonnè Enamel Tazza Cup

About the Item

This French 19th Century antique lovely bronze and cloisonnè enamel tazza or cup with handles is an artwork made by Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892). This Napoleon III period little and refined bowl is an oriental style decorative or vitrine object realized in France during the 19th century, signed by the artist. Hand made in gilded bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamel on a light blue background, decorated with stylized floral Ottoman taste motifs. The cup or tazza features two curved shaped handles casted with floral patterns, ending with pine cones details. The gilt bronze and enamel paintings alternate continuously. The cup rests on a circular socle base. A small but refined eye-catching multipurpose object with perfect proportions, manufactured with attention to details and colorful decorations. A perfect collectible piece to expose in your vitrine or to use as a free standing piece, fill it with bon bons or fruit as we have proposed in the photos or use it as an eccentric paperweight. Wonderful condition! Measures: Height 9, width 17, diameter base 6 cm Born in 1810, Ferdinand Barbedienne started at n°30 boulevard Poissonnière in Paris one of the most famous 19th century artistic bronze casting companies. He died in 1892. In addition to his personal production, he worked for famous artists such as Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883), Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) and Louis Barrias (1841-1905 At the London Universal Exhibition of 1862 Barbedienne exhibited some « cloisonné » enamel works, which were for most of them designed by Constant Sévin, and won medals in three different categories : Furniture, Silversmith work and Artistic bronzes, combining for some pieces with enamels (Oriental style cup, Château de Compiègne, Inv. C 71-122). Barbedienne’s production was always highly esteemed and he was, himself admired by contemporary art critics who compared him during the 1878 Universal Exhibition to a « prince of industry and the king of bronze-casting ».

  • French 19th Century Empire Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Decorative Jewelry Box
    Located in Firenze, IT
This French Empire 19th century rectangular porcelain dresser box or jewlery decorative casket has a wonderfully patinated powder blue/cerulean light blue background color and features grotesque masks, architectural vase, fruit, flowers and leafy scrolled design throughout painted as a trompe l’oeil in the round. Ormolu mounts enrich the whole box. The paintings on this casket are striking as is the color palette used, a wonderful mix of light purple, cream, blue and soft brown. The lid is centered by a grotesque mask inspired by antiquity. The front, back and sides are profusely decorated with architectural elements, cartouches and volutes. The design is centered by a vase with a fruit arrangement that appear to be plums. The decoration could refer to the allegory of autumn and the mask painted on the lid could refer to Bacchus. Both the color of the porcelain and the paintings are very unusual and a sign of high quality and uniqueness. The box was most probably given to a high-ranking lady as a gift on the occasion of her marriage, or perhaps after the birth of a child. The lidded box is fitted with ormolu mounts, hinges and clasp. A gilt bronze band finelly chiseled in the form of a rope adorns the upper part. The trinket box rests on four gilt bronze lion paw feet. This striking French porcelain box...
