Hand painted majolica platter in the style of Jacopo Schiavon di Cafaggiolo
About the Item
This beautiful platter in hand painted majolica is a copy of an important piece by renowned Renaissance artist Jacopo Schiavon, from the Tuscan town of Cafaggiolo.
The original is in the collection of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, while this exemplar was probably created in Tuscany in the 20th C.
Probably around 1495 Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco dei Medici, having retired to live in the quiet of the villa of Cafaggiolo, which he had received as property from his cousin Lorenzo the Magnificent, was followed by two potters from Montelupo who had worked for him in Florence. These are the brothers Piero and Stefano di Filippo Schiavon (that is, coming from Schiavonia, more or less present-day Croatia). In the very last years of the 15th century the two brothers from Montelupo settled in some rooms annexed to the Medici villa of Cafaggiolo, perhaps the site of the current stables, thus starting the production of Cafaggiolo majolica which reached its peak in the first half of the 16th century. A decisive and exceptional leap in quality occurs when Stefano's son Jacopo begins to work in the workshop. Jacopo creates truly high-level pieces, clearly influenced by the work of Botticelli, Filippino Lippi and Piero di Cosimo.

Studio DeSimoneWayland
Marcello De Simone and Bruce Wayland are the Amsterdam based Italian/American design duo behind Studio DeSimoneWayland. Since 2010 they have been combining their backgrounds in both studio art and art history to create one of a kind wall art. Their medium of choice is ceramic plates, at first combined with paintings in their Altered Perspectives series, and later created in stoneware and porcelain by the artists in their atelier in Amsterdam. The combination of plates with paintings, as well as handmade ceramics and porcelain has developed into a slight obsession with the forms and shapes of antique table services. This has led to the forms themselves becoming the focus of their latest work which is in unglazed extra white porcelain and coloured stoneware. Their work has been shown in various locations in Europe, and most recently at the Chairish Art Gallery at Bergdorf’ Goodman in New York from January 16 to April 10, 2023. In 2022 Studio DeSimoneWayland were included in the prestigious Homo Faber Guide of the best European artist-makers.

This blue Delft collectible wall plate is exquisitely decorated with the typical parrakeets and floral theme of the Velsen Aardewerkfabriek Sassenheim in Holland. The scalloped and fluted shape of this large platter Keramiekfabriek Velsen was founded in 1920 in the town of Velsen, nearby Haarlem in the Netherlands. It started out as an art pottery factory called the "Kennemer Pottenbakkerij". In 1936 the name was changed to Velsen. In 1943, during the second world war, the factory was ordered to move, and was resettled in the nearby town of Sassenheim. After the war the factory started to produce mainly handpainted Delftware, both in blue & white and polychrome styles. Especially the polychrome style became its strength, because Velsen used a wider and more colourful palette of colours than most other Delftware producers. Velsen also made green Delft (green & white) and red Delft...Category
