Midcentury Green and Gold "Sommerso Bullicante" Murano Glass Italian Bowl, 1960

About the Item

Stunning midcentury green and gold Murano glass bowl or ashtray. This handmade item was produced in Italy during 1960 and it is attributed to Archimede Seguso. This piece is unique as made with the "Sommerso Bullicante" technique. “Sommerso”, which in Italian literally means “submerged” is a technique used to create several layers of glass (in this case with green and gold as contrasting colors) inside a single object, giving the illusion of “immersed” colors that lay on top of each other without mixing. "Bullicante", which in Italian literally means "full of bubbles", means that the artist created inside the layers of glass a decoration made of small bubbles of air. The piece is abundantly covered in gold leaf with the folded edge and decorative fold, and its luxurious presence will smarten a midcentury-style living room or studio. Archimede Seguso was an Italian glass manufacturer known for his intricate glass vases, necklaces, and sculptures. Spanning a wide range of forms and colors, his subject matter included animals and abstract shapes. Born in 1909 in Murano, Italy, he was part of an illustrious legacy of Italian glassmakers, their ancestry spanning over six centuries to the 14th century. Seguso notably led a revival of ancient Venetian glass-making techniques, specifically "filigrana", which produced lattice-like patterns. Seguso ran the family business Seguso Vetri d'Arte, from 1937-1942. The artist died in 1999 in his hometown of Murano, Italy. The Seguso company continues to produce glass, with works included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
