About the Item

A beautiful and unique hand thrown stoneware bowl, with amazing glaze. Made by Francesca Mascitti Lindh at Arabia, Finland. Excellent condition. Incised signature "FML" and "ARABIA". Francesca Lindh (1931-) trained in Italy at Liceo Artistico delle Belle Artiand 1946-48, and in Finland at Institute of Industrial Arts 1949-52, Francesca Mascitti-Lindh - like Kyllikki Salmenhaara - was interested in the contrasting qualities of different clays, and her own distinctive technique has established her as one of Finland's leading potters. For Arabia she worked until 1989. Francesca and her husband Richard exhibited successfully in Finland and abroad, e.g. in Brussels, Cannes, Milan and New York. In 1952 and 1957 they won a scholarship and first prize from the museum on Contemporary Art, New York. Francesca's international awards include an honorable mention in the Milan Triennale 1957, and gold medals at Faenza 1973 and 1977; first price, Museum of Contemporary Crafts, 1956; First price, Gualdo Tadino, 1961; 1972, 1974, Ravenna price, Faenza 19742 and 1974; Honorary mention Ceramic Compositions in Contemporary Art, Sopot, 1980; Stella al Merito del Lavoro, Italy 1981; and The applied art award of the Finnish State. Her work is represented in many museum collections worldwide, including Museum of Art and Design, Helsinki; Faenza, Museo Internationale delle Ceramiche; Gualdo Tadino Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; Arabia Museum, Helsinki, Victoria & Albert Museum as well as Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Toini Muona (1904-1987) was one of the most respected art ceramists and trendsetters in Finnish ceramic art and art industry in the 1930s–1950s. Her artworks represent clean modern reduced forms and motives taken from finnish nature. Toini Muona studied sketch drawing at the Central School of Fine Arts from 1923 to 1926 and postgraduate ceramics from 1926 to 1923. In the meantime, she worked as a textile designer at Atelier Vigli from 1929 to 1931, then moved to the Arabian Art Department, where she worked until 1970. In the same year, he received the Finnish National Award for Industrial Arts. Toini Muona was a skilled wheel-thrower who, especially early in her career, created vases, jars, and objets d'art influenced by old Chinese ceramics...
