In Studio Greytak’s crystal bling bowl 13, a cloudlike cluster of quartz magnifies the fiery ambition of pyrite atop a stunning piece of single-cut rock crystal, one of the world’s most magical light stones. Quartz has many varieties, and two of its finest are brought together in this piece. Most Stone Age tools were made from the hard crystal, and in the fourth millennium BC, Mesopotamians engraved quartz cylinders with some of the earliest written words, using them as stamps on clay. Formed millions of years ago under extreme geologic pressure, quartz crystals often grow together in clusters. But their most amazing feature is their ability to convert mechanical energy into electricity and vice versa, a characteristic known as piezoelectricity.
