Vintage decorative Murano bowl/ashtray in green and blue “Sommerso” glass with included bubbles.
Highly collectible, mesmerizing and timeless, Murano glass is one of the most fascinating materials in the world. Used since the 14th century to create vases, plates, bowls and sculptures, it has always been a very traditional craft, especially in its appearance, until designers like Vittorio Zecchin and Flavio Poli matched the ancient manufacturing techniques to a modern design.
Poli is also remembered - together with Seguso - as the mind behind the “Sommerso” technique, consisting in layering glass of different colors to make them look submerged in each other. This innovation earned them a “Compasso d’Oro” in the late 1950s.
The present bowl, most likely a Seguso creation, matches said technique to another traditional Muranese craft, the “Bullicante”, which involves insufflating tiny air bubbles into the glass before the mold thickens, thus obtaining the stunning effect visible in pictures.
The piece is preserved in perfect conditions, with just an expectable patina and minor scratches overall, perfectly normal on a glass object this old.
