Vintage Octagonal Straits Chinese Style Bowl

About the Item

A colourful 'Straits style' ceremonial bowl. Made in China in the 1960s Decorated in the Straits/Peranakan style, this eye-catching bowl is a wonderful representation of the highly sought after style. An array of hues: turquoise, pink, yellow, green; each tone highlighting and enhancing the hand painted figural scenes. The base of this large ‘octagonal’ bowl is illustrated with a symbolic scene of a dragon and phoenix, encircling one another; colourfully representing a harmonious union between yin and yang. The octagonal shape of the bowl, and the symbolic displays means it would have been use a ceremonial piece; Perhaps as an offering or centerpiece at a wedding. In good condition, its only showing minor signs of age to the glazed finish.
