"1928 Olympics, " Highly Rare, Hand Painted Plate with Chiron as Archer by Sphinx

About the Item

This extremely rare plate celebrates the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam with an image of Chiron -- the centaur who was considered wiser and higher than his fellow centaurs, and who brought skill and knowledge to many of the Gods of ancient Greece. Of course, his excellence in the use of bow and arrow also alludes to one of the premier sports of the Olympics. The artist was Willem Jacob Rozendaal, who was widely known for his stained glass design and woodcut prints. From 1924 to 1937 he worked at the N.V. De Sphinx firm in Maastricht, Netherlands, which produced this plate. Most or all of the glazes -- including a lovely gold glaze -- were hand applied, perhaps by Rozendaal himself. The reverse side is well marked and retains an old auction label.
