About the Item
A 1960s Italian Murano dark purple clear case centrepiece dish in the shape reminiscent of a manta ray.
The island of Murano in Venice, Italy is renowned for its very long tradition of glass-making, which begun in 1291.
By the 20th century, Venetian glassmakers began to work collaboratively with artists and designers, elevating glassmaking as an art form. In the 1980s there was an influx of glassmakers creating unique art glass, as well as artists training in glassmaking specifically.
Some of the most notable names of the Venetian glassmakers include: Fratelli Toso, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Carlo Scarpa.
There are many different types of Murano glass depending on the technique used by the glassblower, such as cristallo glass, smelto (enamelled) glass, aventurine and sommerso glass.

- Dame Lucie Rie, 1950's Porcelain Footed Bowl with Manganese Glaze.By Lucie RieLocated in London, GBThis is a great example of a Lucie Rie iconic hand-thrown, footed bowl with manganese glaze. The bowl bears the artist's monogram seal mark under. Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born British ceramics artist. Rie’s works, usually consisting of hand-thrown pots, bottles, and bowl forms, are noteworthy for their Modernist forms. Born in 1902 in Vienna, Austria, she studied pottery at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1937, she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition and by the following year, Rie moved to London to flee Nazi Austria. Once settled in the British capital, she maintained a small studio and continued to produce pottery and small clay objects, including ceramic buttons and jewellery which she sold to support herself.
