Ancient Giustiniani Neapolitan Plate, Italy 19th Century

About the Item

Giustiniani Majolica plate is an original artwork realized in the end of the 19th century. Realized by Manifattura Giustiniani, Neaples. Made in Italy. Ø cm. 21 Painted Majolica with grotesque brim. Fair conditions: chips on the edge, cooking defects. Quality Italian Majolica work in polychrome painting depicting a mythological creature, a kind of winged victory wounded by naturalistic and stylized decorations. The repertoire of the elements cames from the Ancient Greek and the Classic world and the colors are the typical Mediterranean ones. This work has been realized by Manifattura Giustiniani that was one of the most famous Neapolitan ceramic factories whose activity dates back to the 17th and 19th centuries. Like many Neapolitan factories, the Manufacture Giustiniani found its maximum source of inspiration in the Greek-Roman decorative works. Following the first excavations of Pompeii, geometric patterns and mosaics were discovered, from which the Neapolitan factories were inspired for the production of their production. These artifacts were intended for the creation of Fine floor carpets. The most common themes consisted of squared funds that often involved the use of the Meander, a fundamental symbolic element in the figurative repertoire of antiquity.
