Chinese Black Lacquer Tray with Painted Winter Landscape, c. 1850

About the Item

This 19th-century tray has a simple rectangular form with low sides and rounded corners. A black lacquer finish cloaks the exterior and offers the perfect canvas for a quiet winter landscape painting. Brushed atop a printed backdrop, the wintery scene depicts a small cabin tucked within a snowy riverbank and a towering pagoda in the distance. Tall leafless trees bisect the melancholy setting, backed by grey skies. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
