Chinese plique-a-jour dish

About the Item

This Chinese plique-a-jour (French for glimpse of the day) dish is effectively a small stained glass window, decorated with a spray of flowers and a butterfly to the centre, and smaller sprays to the rim. The glass is held in small cells made of brass wire in the same way as cloisonne. There is a brass outer rim and the piece sits on a brass footrim. It measures 180 mm (7 inches) in diameter and it stands 25 mm (1 inch) high. There are a few cracks to some of the cells but the glass is still held firmly in place. It would date from the 1920's.
