Italian Breccia Pernice Marble Carved Lobed Basin with Foliate Motif

About the Item

This marble basin was hand-carved from beautiful breccia pernice marble. Breccia pernice is mined in Verona, in northeast Italy and like all breccia marble, it is known for its large, angular inclusions. Our basin has a lovely salmon color with red, brown, and beige deposits. Thick gadrooning adorns the outside of the basin, continuing to the underside, forming a stylized scalloped shell. The back of the interior has a carved acanthus leaf that terminates at a thick block in the back of the sink. When installing the basin as a sink, the block would be used to affix the marble to the wall. Our Italian carved lobed basin can also be used as a unique planter or a large decorative bowl. The basin weighs roughly 91 lbs.

  • Small Italian Beige and Burgundy Marble Lobed Basin or Vide Poche
    Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in Italy during the 1900’s, this small marble lobed basin would make a great vide-poche. A vide-poche (literally “empty pocket”) is a small storage bowl for everyday items, such as car keys, loose change, wallets, etc. A marble basin of this size might have originally been used in a Catholic church as a holy water vessel. The gadrooned lobes carved along the outside give the appearance of a stylized scalloped shell. On the back of the shell is an excavated block of marble, which is how the basin would have been affixed to a wall. The beautiful beige colored marble with burgundy inclusions and white veining has been carved with a quarter round molding along the rim. A versatile item, our small Italian marble shell basin...
