Large Italian Majolica Charger, circa 18th Century

About the Item

A large charger with a complex scene in polychrome glazes. Hand decorated glazed earthenware, 17.5" in diameter. This style of pottery decoration, originating about 1500 in Faenza, Italy, and popular throughout the 16th century, in which paintings comparable in seriousness to Italian Renaissance easel paintings were applied to majolica ware. The subjects, usually biblical, historical, and mythological scenes, are executed with a realism, including the use of perspective.

    This antique Dutch Delft charger was made in the 18th century, circa 1770. It features a beautiful flower-filled garden hand painted in beautiful polychrome colors. We see a single large, bright yellow peony, other flowers painted in shades of purple, flower buds painted red, green leaves, a pierced rock painted deep cobalt blue, and the garden fence painted red and yellow. The border of the charger is decorated with a ring of flower buds in purple and red with green leaves. The overall effect is lovely!
