Lotus Form Puddingstone Basin

About the Item

This contemporary hand-carved stone basin evokes the graceful shape of a traditional lotus flower. Shaped with undulating curves, the container has the look of free-form pottery. The mesmerizing textures displayed in this basin are inherent to the puddingstone, a material quarried in the Liaoning region of China and prized by scholars for its exceptional patterning. Exploiting the stone’s conglomerate nature to suggest painterly daubs of color, the sculptor gives the vessel an almost fluid appearance.
