Antique Arts & Crafts Copper Lotus Dish or Vide Poche by Marie Zimmermann

About the Item

An American Arts & Crafts era fluted and flaring floriform dish or vide poche by American silversmith and metalworker, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), dating circa 1920. The design is a simple and abstracted lotus blossom composed of eight flaring and gently curving petals with pointed tips. The dish retains its original patina in a dark bronze color with visible hammered finishing marks. Very good original condition with expected scuffs on base. Fully marked underfoot: M. Zimmermann / Maker over her MZ artist's cipher; measuring 7.88 in. diameter. The design reflects Zimmermann's ability to interpret historical design sources for her clients — this pointed-petal form relates directly to Chinese designs produced during the T'ang Dynasty (618-906 CE). Two similar examples of Zimmermann's fluted floriform designs for a dish and bowl are illustrated on page 290 in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2011.

  • Antique Arts & Crafts Candlestick Pair by Marie Zimmermann
    By Marie Zimmermann
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A pair of silvered Arts & Crafts flori-form candlesticks by American metalworker, jeweler, and designer, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). Both candlesticks are fully marked and from the artist's estate. A similar design for gilded copper candlesticks is illustrated on page 329, fig. 10.7 of The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2011. This heavily silvered Arts and Crafts design dates circa 1915 while Zimmermann maintained a workshop studio and showroom at the National Arts Club in New York. The domed and scalloped bases show Hammer marks and the twisted tube stems support lobed and fluted collars with removable candle cup inserts. Each candlestick is stamped M. Zimmermann/Maker over her MZ cipher underfoot and measures 15.5 in. Height x 3.5 in. Diameter (upper) x 5.25 in Diameter (base). The candlesticks are in very good condition with small spots of tarnish, oxidation, and a little wear to the edges. Both removable candle inserts have a slightly darker matte surface which is likely the result of rhodium plating, a technique Zimmermann used...
