Antique French Napoleon III Game Box in Boulle Marquetry
About the Item
Antique French Napoleon III gambling chest in "Boulle" Marquetry, with game elements inside. Second half of 19th century.
Small wood gambling chest with playing cards and mother of pearls jetton.
Lid decorated with inlaid brass and tortoiseshell. Two compartment with walls.
It retains original seller label under the bottom, marked "ROGER AINE, rue Saint-Honore n. 171, Tabletier, Paris 1".
The playing cards are a double imaged standard French pattern designed by Nicholas Marie Gatteaux, a French sculptor and engraver in 1827. Gatteaux designed a double imaged pattern as shown here and this was the official French pattern until 1945. His name can be found in the centre of the sheild on the Jack of Clubs. The cards have an 1890 tax stamp with the text 'RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' and 'DÉCRET DU 12 AVRIL 1890'. All cards have the official French watermark and shiny gold corners.
A beautiful old Boulle-worked box in a remarkably fine condition, without a loss or lift.
