Chinese Treasure Chest with Reverse Glass Painted Panels. c. 1850

About the Item

As much an artwork as a piece of furniture, this 19th century treasure chest from northern China is richly decorated with relief carvings and delicate gilt paintings. The doors bear inset reverse glass panels painted with beautiful women, the apron and doors are carved with auspicious flowers, and the top is decorated with lotus flowers— a Chinese symbol of purity. This colorful elmwood chest is a beautiful example of reverse glass portraiture, and looks lovely on display as a tabletop cabinet.
