19th Century Irish Killarney Ware Arbutus & Marquetry Work Box
About the Item
A stunning early 19th century Irish Killarney ware arbutus wood work box, the hinged cover typically inlaid with a scene of Glena Cottage (Killarney) and meandering shamrocks, Inscribed "MADE IN THE GAP OF DUNLOE KILLARNEY" above inscription "Glena Cottage of Killarney", the underside of the lid inlaid with an Irish harp and trailing shamrocks enclosing a fitted interior.
Arbutus and yew are the main timbers used in Killarney furniture and were versatile in the effects created by the use of its veneers from the root, trunk and branches. Other local timbers were also used including holly, sycamore, laburnum and maple as well as Irish bog oak.
