A 19th Century Brass Bound Mandalay Teak Campaign Dressing Box, Burma Circa 1860
About the Item
These boxes were made for British military officers who were posted in Burma (now Myanmar) & India during the days of British rule.
The brass & copper bound teak case is profusely inlaid with finely worked brass filigree wire and fitted with its original forged iron carrying handles & (non-functioning) ‘ringing’ lock mechanism.
The lid opens to an interior housing a reticulated shaving mirror, rising above a recessed compartment flanked on either side by smaller lidded compartments – one with a ‘secret ’compartment. The lids interior features an architectural carved pediment centred by a small later mirror, flanked by glass fronted roundels & columns intended to hold mementos, i.e. locks of hair, flower petals etc., over a carved & pierced arcading letter rack.
