Antique Fan-Shaped Biscuit Box

About the Item

This charming Victorian-era silverplate biscuit box is intricately crafted to resemble a Japanese fan, a one-of-a-kind motif rarely seen in boxes of this period. By twisting the beautifully carved handle at the top, the fan opens in a playful sweep to reveal the interior compartment for holding one’s favorite baked treats. Though in the US biscuits are soft, flaky baked goods, British biscuits actually resemble cookies and crackers and commonly accompany a traditional tea. Today, biscuit boxes are highly collectible, with unique examples such as this becoming more and more difficult to acquire. Circa 1880 10 1/4” wide x 5 1/4" deep x 12 1/2” high
