Antique French Pyrogene, Utensil Holder, Secret Box, 19th Century

About the Item

Rare sculpture of a joyful monk with a secret compartment. A so called Pyrogene, which was used for smoking utensils, such as matches. The monk holds two bottles in his hands and raises one arm, ready to toast the bottle. The monk's head can be removed to reveal a secret compartment inside the figure. I wonder what's already hidden in the secret compartment! The hinge on the lid is defective, but the lid can of course simply be put aside. Cool figure made of cast metal with age-related patina.
