Antique English Sterling Silver Fox Boxes

About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique English sterling silver fox boxes; part of our continental ornamental silverware collection. These magnificent antique English cast sterling silver boxes have been realistically modelled in form of a pair of crouching foxes. Each piece is ornamented with details reproducing the fox's fur and anatomical features. These silver foxes bear a flush hinged hallmarked cover to the back; the flush hinge indicates the high quality of these pieces. The interior of each piece bears the original gilding. Each fox bears the retailer's mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, 112 Regent Street, W' to the underside. These magnificent boxes are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. Condition These silver foxes are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Full British hallmarks to the surface of the each fox's hind and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this English silverware. These exceptional and rare antique George IV sterling silver boxes have a plain rectangular form. The surface of each silver box is plain and unembellished, with applied thread decoration to the lower rim. Each box is fitted with a plain hinged hallmarked cover, ornamented with further applied thread decoration to the upper rim. The upper plateaus of the covers are individually embellished with an impressive contemporary bright cut engraved crest: one bears out of a ducal coronet a wyvern below the motto 'Avi Numerantur Avorum' - The forefathers of our forefathers are numbered and to the other an eagle regardant with wings extended grasping an escutcheon charged with a lion's head, below the 'Virtute et Robore' - By Virtue and Strength.
