Engraved Tortoiseshell Music Box with French Revolutionary Inscription

About the Item

This finely engraved and inscribed tortoiseshell music box is a precious piece of French Revolution and Napoleonic history: given as a gift by the Duchess of Gdansk in 1837 to a nephew of the famous revolutionary general Kleber, the box features an engraving which depicts the new Place de la Concorde in Paris, featuring the Luxor Obelisk which had recently been installed in the square. The box is crafted from tortoiseshell and takes a rectangular shape. The inscription on the inside of the box reads ‘Donne par la duchesse de Dantzick au petit neveu de Kleber pour lui rappeler la gloire de son Oncle au pays des Obelisques, 1837’ (Given by the Duchess of Gdansk to the great nephew of Kleber to remind him of the glory of his Uncle in the country of Obelisks, 1837). 'Pays des obelisques' refers to Egypt, where the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde came from, and where Jean-Baptiste Kleber rose to prominence as Napoleon Bonaparte's lieutenant during the campaign of 1798. Kleber distinguished himself during the campaign by retaking Cairo for the French, bringing freemasonry to Egypt, and negotiating the Convention of El-Arish (1800).
